The Difference Between an AI Wrapper and a Product
Every AI product is a wrapper in the sense that every SaaS product is a wrapper around a database. The question is what else is there.

Why 'wrapper' is a lazy criticism
Nobody dismisses a company for being a wrapper around Postgres. The model is infrastructure, and building on infrastructure is what software is.
The criticism only lands when there is genuinely nothing else — a prompt, a text box, and a subscription.
What makes it a product
- It owns a workflow end to end, not a single step
- It holds state the model does not — history, preferences, corrections
- It integrates with the systems where the work actually lives
- It handles the unglamorous parts: permissions, audit, export, failure
Where the evidence points
The AI opportunities with the strongest complaint backing are almost never 'a chatbot for X'. They are specific multi-step processes somebody currently does by hand and describes in detail, which is a much better brief than a category.
