Vertical SaaS Beats Horizontal for Solo Builders
A horizontal tool competes with everyone on every axis. A vertical tool competes on the one axis where the general tool visibly fails.

The asymmetry
A funded horizontal player must serve every industry adequately, which means serving none of them precisely. That gap is structural — they cannot close it without abandoning their own market.
You can close it, because you only have to serve one industry and you can afford a market a hundredth the size.
What vertical actually means
- The vocabulary matches the industry, not the generic category
- The default workflow is the industry's workflow, with no configuration required
- Integrations are with the systems that industry actually uses
- Compliance and reporting requirements are handled, not left as an exercise
Finding the vertical
Look for complaints where somebody names a general-purpose tool and then explains the workaround they need because it does not fit their industry. That sentence is a product specification.
