How to Mine Reviews for Product Ideas

A negative review is a user telling you exactly what they wanted, why they did not get it, and what they did instead. That is a research interview nobody had to pay for.

Where the value is

Skip five-star reviews entirely, and skip one-star reviews that are pure rage with no detail. The gold is in two and three-star reviews: the person liked the product enough to keep using it and is specific about what fails.

What to extract from each

  • The exact step that broke
  • What they expected to happen instead
  • What they do now to cope
  • Whether they left, and what they left for

Turning it into an idea

One review is a data point. When the same missing capability appears across reviews of several different products in a category, that is a gap in the category rather than a flaw in one product — and that is where a new entrant can win.

Put it into practice with real opportunities.
