Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM

Who says it needs to be desktop for proper memory management, servers and embedded can crash willy-nilly with OOM? In any case, Xenix, DG/UX, SunOS/Solaris, Aix, HP-UX, z/OS UNIX, NeXTSTEP.

Ask HN: Why are we still building web UI's just for human consumption?

Right now, as we speak a lot of agents are doing clunky things to operate websites from Codex to Claude, all those website owners might not have the resources to setup an MCP or API just for agents. If this was an exceptional case how come Claude and Codex are still operating websites using clunk embedded web browsers…

And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway

I think the right thing in this context relates more to every day matters that affects people and how they interact with the world. Corruption, unsafety, tax avoidance, vandalism, not paying the bus/tram ticket, littering. As for el sisi. I remember an egyptian friend who fled the country after he did some protes…

Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone

While having something done at Stanford's hospitals, at one point I was placed in a room with signs indicating it was on a heavily filtered ventilation system rated for COVID, etc. It was striking to be in an environment with air almost to clean room quality.

A super-majority of the UN says you're wrong. > As of September 2025, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 157 of the 193 member states of the United Nations (UN), or just over 81% of all UN members Quoted that from Wikipedia because googling it even a littl…

Being ambitious and being a dad

Agreed. I'm well travelled. Have had a very fun and satisfying dating life. A great career. Accomplished many life goals. Nothing comes close to fatherhood. Which frustrates me immensely, because I feel that society at large did everything it could to convince me that parenthood is terrible. Movies and TV shows portra…

US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures

Why not both? Seriously. The USA's current leadership cabal certainly appears to be dancing to the tune of several corrupt world leaders. Even when they contradict each other. Trump is threatening to bomb Oman? Trump is talking smack on South Korea and cuddling up to North Korea again?

Pacing model development in an era of cyber-critical capabilities

You seem to be in denial. Like really heavy denial. Alarm bells are going off everywhere. What people have been worried about for 100 years is actually happening. It's actually really obvious, but for some reason you're unable to fathom it. In reality you're the one responding exactly how these big AI companies want -…

Show HN: Automatically detect and patch walking-dead states in Sierra games

The discussion here reminded me of the "Cruelty Scale" ( https://www.ifwiki.org/Cruelty_scale ) It was originally created specifically in relation to text adventure games, but seems appropriate to a broader range of game types. The rankings are based on criteria like how far the game lets you go after m…

Pacing model development in an era of cyber-critical capabilities

You see it as good news, I see it as writing on the wall that they are losing control. These actions won't scale for more powerful models. We knew the frontier was going to be dangerous, it is, it only gets more dangerous from here, and no one cares until it's too late.

This support Windows and macOS in addition to Linux. I'm not in a hurry to disrupt things on my Linux machine, but I might just have to try this on the other platforms. While it does look extremely likely that AI is used for the copy writing, and probably for some of the code maintenance, I'm not convinced that this i…

I have a sneaking suspicion that if everyone proffering an LLM coding opinion stated their languages and area of focus/expertise we’d all be in a lot more agreement about the output… Example 1: “ as a JavaScript front-end developer working with React and node, I think LLMs save 500 hours a week and are better tha…

Yup, especially on the older lines (Northern, Victoria, Jubilee, Bakerloo). Particulate pollution can be two orders of magnitude higher than at street level. This tends to be glossed over when trumpeting the success of ULEZ measures pushing people away from cars and onto public transport, and I say that as a non-car-o…

Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents

Yes, though since it's a "micro" VM, it shouldn't take up nearly as many resources as a regular VM. Some hypervisors also implement memory ballooning to not take up memory that's not being used, but I'm not sure whether Docker Sandbox's hypervisor implements that.

That just tells us the person wasn’t a good parent either. Your comment assumes the only way to parent is to manipulate, patronize, etc. That’s just one perspective though. How does IKEA come up with names for its products?

My first memory of being angry with not knowing English was when we were trying to read the pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh cards and I clearly remember it being gibberish. Otherwise it's difficult to remember what it was like to not know a skill before you learned it, at least it is for me.

Same thing can be said about Streams in Node.js as well. They had a working streams implementation before the Web Streams API was in browsers (iirc).
