Market Research Tools for Small Teams
Traditional market research assumes a budget and a quarter. Founders have neither. What follows is what actually works at small scale.

A market-size figure from an industry report tells you almost nothing about whether you can get customers. '1% of a $12bn market' has never been a plan, and everyone reading your deck knows it.
Build it bottom-up instead: how many businesses have this exact problem, what would they pay, and how would you reach them. Our free market size calculator forces exactly that structure.
Free sources worth your time
- Software review sites — one and two-star reviews are dense with concrete unmet needs
- Job boards — somebody paying a human to do a task is the strongest possible demand signal
- Forums and communities where your customer already gathers, read rather than posted in
- App store reviews, which are unusually specific about what broke and why they left
The part people skip
Desk research narrows the field. It does not replace talking to people. Ten conversations with the person you think has the problem will reshape your understanding more than a hundred hours of reading — but reading first means those ten conversations start from something real.
